Cultivar Comments: A reddish purple-leaved cultivar of the eastern species Physocarpus opulifolius, Diablo is a medium to fast growing, coarse, upright-spreading shrub with dense ruffled, textured leaves which turn colors ranging from purple and bronze to orange-red in the fall. Beginning in September attractive reddish fruit is formed. The cinnamon brown bark exfoliates into papery strips. Coarse natured, Diablo is best utilized for screening, massing or as a backdrop for plantings in large yards.
